Ventilation Clearances for Undercounter Units: What the Cabinet Must Leave Open
An undercounter unit breathes through its toe kick: air in at one side of the grille, warm air out at the other. Close that grille off with a continuous plinth and the compressor runs hot from the first week.

Most undercounter call-outs in Playa Vista are not a worn part. They are a machine asked to shed heat through an opening that will not let it, because the joinery was drawn before anyone opened the appliance guide. Every figure below comes from Sub-Zero’s own documents rather than from experience, which matters: an installer will argue with a repair shop and nobody argues with the design guide.

Look at the grille before the machine
Kneel down and see what is in front of it. Sub-Zero's manual for the 315I ice maker is blunt about the consequence: anything placed in front of the kickplate or grille restricts airflow and costs the unit performance and efficiency.

Check the opening against the guide
The undercounter design guide gives 24 inches of width and 34½ inches of height for the 24-inch models; the ice machine is narrower at 15¼ inches. Put the socket and water valve in the next cabinet rather than in the opening, or you may need more depth.

Count the return, not just the width
A 3½-inch finished return shows on each side and is meant to match the cabinetry. On the integrated wine columns it is a minimum on all sides, and a framed cabinet needs filler material behind the face frame first.

Leave the door somewhere to go
For a 145-degree opening the unit should stand at least a quarter of an inch proud of the cabinet fronts beside it. Flush still works, but the guide warns the panel may foul anything past 90 degrees.

Two units side by side need a decision
Two 24-inch models come to 48⅛ inches and want a dual installation kit. Without one, Sub-Zero recommends a 2-inch filler between them; with no filler at all, the two doors have to be hinged on opposite sides.

Keep the kickplate removable
It has to come off for service and the floor must not obstruct it. A new floor laid hard against a unit levelled onto the old one is a small remodel mistake with a large bill, because the next repair starts by lifting boards.
While you are down there
Can I put a decorative grille over the kickplate to match the cabinets?
Only if air still passes through it. The installation guides allow the solid part of a kickplate to be covered and never the louvred part, and the same test applies to anything set in front of it. If you cannot feel air moving at the grille with the unit running, that covering is doing harm however good it looks.
