Clearing frost removes the symptom, not the cause. Recurring frost means either warm moist air getting in past a worn gasket or latch, or the defrost circuit failing to melt what forms — a heater, a thermostat, or a drain that has iced over and backed up.
The display reads zero but the ice cream is soft. Which do I believe?
The ice cream. A drifting thermistor reports a temperature the cabinet is not holding, and the control board acts on what it is told. An independent thermometer in the cabinet settles it in an hour.
